A Basque Christmas

asked legendary San Francisco Chef, Gerald Hirigoyen, to create a Christmas menu with authentic Basque specialties. He was elated with the challenge and created a wonderful menu for this very special celebration.


It was not only a challenge for him but also me. I wished to present outstanding wines from Spain, and the search began.


Last year I presented a special gift to my wife Simone, the Wine Spector’s 2020 Number 1 Wine of the Year, the Bodega Marqués de Murrieta Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010. I secured additional bottles and will feature the wine as our hallmark selection for the main course.


I am delighted that I could also procure two other vintages to round out the red wine selections for the evening. Capturing a “second wind,” I was able to find the “Krug” of Cava, the magnificent Kripta for our reception, and for the first course, a captivating Torres Family Milmanda. Deep in the cellar was the Fondillón Gran Reserva 1970, perhaps a perfect wine to accompany Gerald’s sublime Orange Blossom Beignet’s.


This celebration will be a great launch into the New Year – it will be with great pleasure to kick 2021 out the door and welcome in 2022, especially the night before New Year’s Eve, away from the crowd of revelers in our private sanctuary.
